Expression
The Magellan Biologics and Consulting history starts in 2014, when a Group of renowned experts in protein expression in mammalian cells from ExcellGene, a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization, decide to offer their expertise to the scientific community involved in discovery and pre-clinical development projects. A new company is thus established in Portugal, headquartered in Torres Novas and given the name of the most famous Portuguese explorer Magellan.
Through their first consulting mandates, between Year 2015 and Year 2019, the founders recognize the need from a fast-growing number of R&D labs worldwide to develop their own capacity to produce in-house large varieties of candidate proteins to feed their screening programs. Based on the knowledge acquired at ExcellGene, on its proprietary processes and cell lines and through an exclusive licensing agreement Magellan Biologics and Consulting starts its laboratory operations in 2019, first with the Institute for Research and Innovation in Health in Porto and then, since 2021 at Biocant, the Portugal Science & Technology Park for Biotech and Life Science in Cantanhede, in the Coimbra region.
As a first fruit of a joint R&D program between ExcellGene and Magellan, CHO 4Tx®, a revolutionary ready-to-use transfection kit for CHO cells is launched in 2022 and commercialized to support the scientific community discovering new horizons in Transient Protein Expression.
The therapeutic and diagnostic role of recombinant proteins is expanding in a growing number of applications, strongly contributing to medical progress in more and more life-threatening conditions. The discovery stage, which aim is to identify new candidates for further clinical development, is the first key to successful R&D programs and the phase for Magellan’s know-how and products to make a difference. By accelerating basic and applied research we’re willing to contribute to improve and save patients’ lives.
We make Protein Expression in mammalian cells easy and efficient for the benefit of the international scientific community involved in R&D on candidate proteins either for therapeutic or diagnostic use.
