History

Magellan Biologics and Consulting (B&C) Ltd is headquartered in Torres Novas, Portugal, was founded in 2014 as a spin-off of ExcellGene SA, Switzerland. It started consulting in 2015, and laboratory operations with state-of-the-art equipment in 2019 at the i3S, University of Porto, Portugal.

We offer products, materials and services that accelerate research and development in the pharma-biotech sector. We provide for companies and academic groups to make their work easier and more manageable, such as in animal health, cosmetics and nutraceuticals.

Prof. Florian Wurm and Dr. Maria Wurm, partners in life and science, founded Magellan Biologics and Consulting to further the development of biotechnology in Portugal. Over 30 years, they’ve contributed to the pharma-biotech sector with a focus on the development of innovative biologics, using recombinant DNA technology and animal cells in bioreactors.

We are grateful towards the Portugal 2020 program, the Program Norte 2020 and the European Union for providing significant financial support to establish a laboratory at i3S. Full lab operation was achieved by the end of 2018, and an inauguration occurred in May 2019.
